AFCEA West – Virtual Meeting

Dovetailing very neatly with The London Chapter’s March event, the Guest Speaker for our meeting on 15th April will be David Ferbrache – Global Head of Cyber Futures at KPMG.  The topic of his presentation will be “The hard realities of cyber security in the commercial world – the state of the art, the challenges and the scary moments”.

  • The trap of compliance and the struggles firms have to really create a business understanding of cyber risk and how to manage it.
  • The interconnected ecosystem and the need for community action to manage systemic risk and resilience.
  • The changing threat landscape and the rise of cyber extortion – the failures of our policy responses and the misalignment of incentives to counter cyber crime.

David is an acknowledged UK national cyber security expert and is the Head of Global Cyber Futures for KPMG international.  He leads KPMG’s global COVID-19 cyber response, future work on emerging technologies, alliance and partnerships and innovation agenda on cyber; as well as working with KPMG’s largest clients.

Prior to joining KPMG, David was a major contributor to the UK’s first national cyber security strategy, has been involved in establishing most of the UK’s initial national cyber security structures and organisations and led the delivery of the Defence Cyber Security Programme as the Head of Cyber and Space for the Ministry of Defence (MoD).  During his time in MoD, David held a number of senior director level roles including responsibility for a  large element of MoD’s science budget, lead for MoD’s research and development programme into cyber and influence activities and technical director (and fellow) for Information Operations in the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency.  David established the first MoD penetration testing team and undertook the first UK national infrastructure resilience reviews.

David is currently the chair of the Scottish government National Cyber Resilience Advisory Board and was a major contributor to the Scottish government’s cyber resilience strategy.

effect virtually, cognitively as well as physically. The Army’s Land Cyber Programme
is presented a series of opportunities in the next 5-10 years; the modernisation of
electronic warfare and electronic counter measures together with the cyber operations,

Ten years after that, the Government Digital Service organisation was formed to drive further transformation of Public Services.

AFCEA UK West Chapter – Face-to-Face Meeting.

The next meeting for our 2021 / 2022 Season will be on 11th November at the Brickhampton Golf Club, when our Guest Speaker will be Maj Gen (rtd) Peter Williams – Chairman, The BRIXMIS Association.  The subject of Peter’s talk will be “BRIXMIS” in Cold War East Germany.

Peter’s talk will describe the extraordinary ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ contrast between the formal military-military diplomatic activities of the Mission and its highly successful intelligence collection patrolling out on the ground.

Despite the numerous crises during the Cold War, it was only on the eve of German re-unification in 1990 that the Soviets finally ended the liaison agreements that they had put in place with their wartime Western Allies in 1946.

Peter served twice in BRIXMIS, the British military liaison mission in East Germany, during the 1980s.

AFCEA UK West Chapter – December 2021- Lt Col Andy Mathias, RLC – Army Digital Services **MEETING CANCELLED** @ Brickhampton Golf Club
Dec 9 @ 18:30 – 21:00

AFCEA UK West Chapter – Face-to-Face Meeting.

**********  Please be advised that we have had to cancel the meeting on 9th December. Unfortunately, we did not achieve the minimum attendee number threshold to make this event financially viable. **********

Our December meeting will be on 9th December at the Brickhampton Golf Club, when our Guest Speaker will be Lt Col Andy Mathias, RLC –  Army Digital Services, HQ Army.  Please note the change of speaker from our original posting.

The subject of Andy’s talk will be “Culture and Leadership in software development: The drive towards empowered teams”

Army Digital Services (ADS) is refining and implementing its digital transformation but many challenges and hurdles remain. Some people might think that it’s all about the technology and what that will deliver but that is only a part of the story.

Few would argue that team empowerment is not a critical ingredient in successful delivery of software applications at scale. Nurturing that empowerment must surely be a deliberate activity that needs to resonate not just within the team itself but right throughout the organisation. Achieving this in the right balance, especially against a backdrop of inertia, is ultimately a product of culture and leadership.

This talk will provide a perspective from ADS on:

  • the importance of culture and leadership in setting the conditions for successful empowerment and hence delivery
  • the need to challenge legacy mindsets which act as a barrier to transformation
  • exploiting success as catalyst for growth at scale

AFCEA UK West Chapter – February 2022 – Brigadier Philip Muir MBE, Commander 1 (UK) Signal Brigade @ Hub8 Brewery
Feb 10 @ 18:30 – 21:00

AFCEA UK West Chapter – Face-to-Face Meeting.

Following the unavoidable cancellation of our recent planned meetings, the good news is that we’re holding an in-person meeting on the 10 February and have identified a new and interesting venue – the Hub8 Brewery in Cheltenham.  Our guest speaker will be Brigadier Phil Muir MBE, Commander 1 (UK) Sig Bde and Chief G6 HQ ARRC Headquarters 1st (United Kingdom) Signal Brigade.  Brig Muir’s presentation will be “The challenge for 1 (UK) Signal Brigade”

The defence and security landscape has been developing for several years and the changes appear to be accelerating into the future. The Integrated Review highlighted many of the challenges we face and outlined how we were to address them. Technological developments are also accelerating, with the provisioning of ICS in the battlespace needing to match the capabilities that users take for granted in their everyday lives.  To tackle some of these issues there is a requirement for agile thinking, concept development, experimentation, and innovation.

1 (UK) Signal Brigade will be impacted by all these issues and Brig Muir will outline his vision as to how the Brigade will rise to the challenge.
