The Continuous Need for Dynamic and Intelligence-led Cyber Controls Testing
Peter Williamson CEO, SecureCloud+

There are many cyber risk and controls frameworks to choose from such as NIST and ISF. No one can argue with the common sense approach of choosing one and implementing it. But many companies still apply controls with little reference to the risks they are designed to mitigate. Therein lies a danger as the hazards that trigger cyber risk events continue to grow, change and evolve.

About the speaker

Peter began his career in computers and communications in 1979 after leaving the Royal Navy. He has a reputation for fast and successful delivery of secure managed ICT services at all Government Security Classification tiers in the UK and military operations overseas. He has assembled a team at SecureCloud+ that includes some of the leading technologists and service delivery practitioners of secure managed services, supported by a trusted ecosystem of technology and service delivery partners.

  • Responsible for securing multi-million pounds enduring managed service contracts for secure systems across public sector including the MOD, Foreign and Commonwealth Officeand the British Council.

Maersk – Collateral victims of a state-sponsored Cyber Weapon:
Implementing the Lessons from a Cyber Attack
Andy Powell – CISO, A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S

In June 2017, Maersk became one of the most high-profile collateral victims of a state- sponsored Cyber Weapon – NotPetya.

The Talk will explain the real and rapid business and cost impact this had, and the lessons that were rapidly identified and how they are now being implemented. It will pose some fundamental questions about how industry and others should shape our approach in the era of increasing state escalation of cyber weaponry.

About the Speaker

Andy spent 28 years in the RAF including time as CIO/CISO for the RAF and later Joint Operations before his last tour heading up Cyber Defence Operations for the MoD.

Since leaving the RAF 5 years ago, he has headed up the UK Cybersecurity business for first CSC and then Capgemini before joining Maersk as CISO in May 2018.

During his RAF career he spent 2 years on exchange with the USAF in the Pentagon where he first became associated with AFCEA and has maintained strong contacts ever since.

“The Future Is Out Of This World”

The future of space technology

Please note that the dress code for gentlemen is business suit / jacket & tie and the equivalent for ladies. No jeans, t-shirts or trainers.

Stuart Eves is a satellite-system engineer. He has recently formed his own consultancy company after spending 14 years with Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) and 16 years with the UK Ministry Of Defence.

During his time with the MOD, Stuart initiated the TopSat satellite programme, which established a new world record for “resolution per mass of satellite”, and for a time formed part of the space gallery at the Science Museum.

He has recently published Space Traffic Control, a book which describes the measures needed to maintain the space environment and protect satellites from both natural hazards and man-made threats such as space debris.

Stuart has an MSc in Astrophysics, a PhD in constellation design, and has been a fellow of both the Royal Astronomical Society and the British Interplanetary Society for more than 25 years.  He takes an active interest in all things space and is thus best described as an “astro-nut”!

‘Painting Sunflowers’
making cyber space safe through small actions
– Presentation from an NCSC Senior –

The talk will take inspiration from Van Gogh and his impact on the world in such a short time. In 1882, he wrote to his brother Theo about drawing saying “For the great doesn’t happen by impulse alone, and is a succession of little things brought together…. and the great isn’t accidental; it must be willed”.
The speaker will talk about the combination of small things we can all do together to make a difference from inspiring others to join us in this endeavour to fixing things in our control. We too, have a short time to make an impact and paint our happy flowers.

AFCEA London – Apr 2019 – Monthly Meeting Young AFCEA Event @ Central London (TBC)
Apr 4 @ 18:00 – 21:00

Monthly Meeting

Young AFCEA Event

This meeting in the South Kensington area is organised by the London Chapter Young AFCEA Sub-Committee.  Note that we are not publicising the exact venue, but full details will be disclosed in the joining instructions.

The format for the evening will be a series of lightning presentations given by members of 591 SU and also from PhD Candidates from Royal Holloway.  Following the presentations, there will be the usual informal networking reception.

This is another great opportunity for AFCEA Corporate Members to send Graduate Trainees or Apprentices to meet and network with their peers in the military and Industry and to broaden their knowledge and experience.  There is a maximum limit of 40 attendees, so preference in the first instance must be given to Young AFCEAns (i.e. aged under 35).  Places will be allocated on a first come – first served basis.  Bookings received from “not so young” AFCEAns will be put on a waiting list and places will be allocated as appropriate.  Payments for any bookings received which can’t be fulfilled will be refunded.
