AFCEA London – Virtual Meeting
The Guest Speaker for our meeting on 1st July will be Sarah Lyons – Deputy Director, Economy and Society Team – NCSC. The topic of Sarah’s presentation will be ‘NCSC work through the pandemic’. Further details and an abstract will follow shortly.
Sarah is a senior leader in cyber security and Deputy Director for the Economy and Society Team within the NCSC. The Economy and Society team forms part of the National Resilience Directorate and leads on interactions with charities, SMEs, academic institutions, the wider economy as well as the public. Following a range of roles in Whitehall departments, Sarah has been working in cyber security since 2010 and has grown the team from scratch when the NCSC was formed. She has also led the NCSC’s cyber security support to HMG’s COVID-19 response’.

AFCEA London Chapter – Emerging Leaders (formerly Young AFCEANs) Networking Event – RAF Club, Piccadilly, London, W1J 7PY.
Our Emerging Leaders (Young AFCEANs) sub – Committee are organising a networking / social event to be held in The RAF Club, on 12th August. Join us to expand your network in a relaxed setting and get to know other professionals. This will be a great opportunity to re-engage, re-energise and re-connect with AFCEA London. AFCEA London – Virtual Meeting
The opening meeting for our 2021 / 2022 Season will be on WEDNESDAY on 1st September, when our guest speaker will be Brig (rtd) Greg Wilson – Microsoft UK National Technology Officer (National Security).
The title of Greg’s presentation is #makingthebestbetter and he will provide a candid insight into the transformation programme the Field Army have undergone over the last two years, to better empower their workforce, optimise performance and accelerate digital change. The # in the title was the programme hashtag and the digital elements of the programme won the Defence and Police Project Award in the UK IT industry 2020 Awards. Greg led the transformation programme and, having stepped across to Microsoft, he will conclude with some thoughts as to the future digital challenges to be overcome by the Field Army.
Brig (Retd) Greg Wilson is Microsoft UK’s National Technology Officer (National Security). His role is to help National Security and Public Sector clients and partners to work with Microsoft technologies to achieve more by empowering growth, innovation and digital transformation. Greg is a former senior Army Officer, who commanded informational professionals on operations and in barracks from Brigade command to Squadron command level throughout his career. In his staff appointments, he worked in capability and acquisition roles within MOD, Navy Command and Army Headquarters. His final military roles included Head of C4ISTAR capability development for the British Army and was the transformation programme lead for both Field Army HQ and Defence Intelligence. He was also one of the MOD’s Government Major Programme Review Team Leaders, who reviewed cross Government Major Programmes on behalf of the Cabinet Office. A Chartered Engineer, Chartered IT Professional and Chartered Manager; he is also Chair of the Royal Signals Institute and a Colonel Commandant of the Royal Signals. He is a graduate of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Programme and the military’s Higher Command and Staff Course.

AFCEA UK Southern Chapter – Re-launch Dinner.
The UK Southern Chapter are planning on hosting a dinner at The Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, on Thursday 2nd September. This event will mark the re-launch of our Chapter after a period of dormancy. Clearly, the running and management of this event will be governed by any covid restrictions that may remain in place at the time.

AFCEA UK West Chapter – First face to face meeting.
The UK West Chapter are planning on holding the opening meeting for our 2021 / 2022 Season on 7th September at the Brickhampton Golf Club. Please note the date change to deconflict with other Industry events that members may likely be attending.
This will be our first face to face meeting since March 2020 and our Guest Speaker will be Col Andy Percival from Land CEMA. The subject of Andy’s talk will be the Land Digitisation Programme (THEIA).
Multi Domain Integration presents new opportunities for the Army to maximise its
contribution to Defence and to mission success. The Integrated Review has sought to
balance investment and structural adjustment to evolve an Asymmetric Army for the
Digital Age, one more able to adopt new technologies and concepts and apply military
effect virtually, cognitively as well as physically. The Army’s Land Cyber Programme
is presented a series of opportunities in the next 5-10 years; the modernisation of
electronic warfare and electronic counter measures together with the cyber operations,
and their integration, is a key lever to Protect, Understand and to Deliver Effects across
the cyber and electromagnetic domain both in collaboration with and complementary
to other Defence capabilities. Colonel Andy Percival will outline the approach of Land
Cyber and the challenges it faces to deliver an ambitious programme.

AFCEA UK West Chapter Meeting
The UK West Chapter are holding the second meeting for our 2021 / 2022 Season on 6th October at the Brickhampton Golf Club. Please note the date change to deconflict with another event at the Brickhampton venue.
Our Guest Speaker will be Peter Wilson – Public Sector CTO for EMEA, Pegasystems Inc. The subject of Peter’s talk will be the Evolution of Government Digital Services. Peter was formerly HMRC Head of Solution Architecture and Feasibility Study Lead on the UKs first Major Digital Service Self-Assessment Online
20 years ago this year, saw the emergence of the Government Gateway heralding the start of the government digital service journey.
Ten years after that, the Government Digital Service organisation was formed to drive further transformation of Public Services.
How has this shaped how big departments approach digital transformation, how has it ultimately shaped not only the citizen experience, but also the wider software industry and, where do we go from here?

AFCEA London Chapter – First face to face meeting.
The second meeting for our 2021 / 2022 Season, will held be on Thursday 7th October and will also be our first “live” event for 18 months, or so. We are very kindly being hosted by PwC UK, at their 7 Moor London Riverside, London SE1 2RT offices, close to London Bridge Station. Following the speaker’s presentation, there will be the usual informal networking and drinks reception. This is a very welcome first step back to something like “normality” for the London Chapter after such a long time.
Our host speaker for the evening will be Chrissy Morgan – PwC’s IoT & OT R&D Manager and the title of her presentation will be “Malicious Machines”.
With the dramatic increase of connected devices and developers pushing the frontiers of what is possible with IoT technology, we need to understand that it is not just the technology that is evolving, so are the threats.
This talk will cover the evolution of IoT malware and research. The harsh reality is that despite all the advancements, while we are putting out the fires of legacy systems, unpatched hardware or inadequately monitored flat networks, threat actors will exploit new vulnerabilities and adapt their methods to avoid detection.

Chrissy Morgan is the IoT and OT R&D Manager for PwC UK. She provides strategic technical insight and research into client environments and services within Operational Technology. She manages the PwC UK IoT/OT Labs, leads our OT research programs and works closely across our national and international teams. She provides the latest findings from our testing of vendor tooling and is a contributor to improvement and preview programs. Chrissy has an MSc in Advanced Security and Digital forensics and 19 years’ experience within IT and consulting, working previously with Government, Pharmaceutical, Close protection and Physical Security sectors.
Chrissy has marked achievements for her contribution and research, including winning the (ISC)² Up and Coming Security Professional award and being a SC magazine Top Woman of Cyber Security. A natural problem solver, she has won multiple technical Capture the Flag tournaments such as the Cyber Security Challenge UK, a BlackHat Challenge Coin, placed Top 5 for Pragyan International CTF and SANS ICS Tournament with her teams. She is an experienced international speaker and has held IoT hardware hacking workshops with organisations such as The World Economic Forum.

In the event that we have to limit numbers and we are over-subscribed, priority will be on a “first come first served” basis. Any unsuccessful bookings will be notified and refunded.

AFCEA London Chapter – Virtual AGM.
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Elections for the Officers and Committee of the AFCEA London Chapter for 2021/ 2022 will necessarily take a different format. This year, voting will be conducted via email with the results announced during the virtual AGM, to be held on Thursday 21st October 2021 at 17:00 hrs. The Election Notice has only been sent to current AFCEA Members shown on the AFCEA International database as being affiliated to the London Chapter as at 31/08/2021

AFCEA London Chapter – Virtual Meeting.
The guest speaker for our meeting on 4th November will be Andy Watkin-Child, Director – The Security Institute. The title for Andy’s talk will be “How does the UK and European Defence Industrial Base (DIB) address Federal and US DoD cyber regulatory requirements to deliver adequate cyber security?” Addressing the needs, objectives and goals of the June 2021 Atlantic Charter.
The presentation will bring out the changing US cyber environment, that has developed significantly since Cyber Security Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) was placed on hold ahead of a congressional hearing next month. It will highlight the recent developments in US cyber legislation and its potential impact. Andy will speak about the CMMC and existing Defence Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) compliance, Federal Information Security Modernization Act (FISMA), the DoJ’s recent announcement about prosecution under the False Claims Act (FCA), recent Treasury updates associated with ransomware payments and the need for a close working relationship with the US and partners on cyber standards development.

Andy is a 20-year veteran of cybersecurity, risk management and technology transformation, holding global leadership positions in 1st and 2nd Lines of for cybersecurity (CISO), cyber risk management, operational risk, and technology. For International organisations including Grupo Santander, Mizuho Corporate Bank, Penguin Random House and Rolls-Royce plc. Andy is a founding member of the US DoD Cyber Security Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) AB standards working group, developing the CMMC cybersecurity assessment methodology and has been supporting U.S. Federal agencies, Senate Commissions and trade associations evaluate cyber risk strategy and compliance.

AFCEA UK West Chapter – Face-to-Face Meeting.
The next meeting for our 2021 / 2022 Season will be on 11th November at the Brickhampton Golf Club, when our Guest Speaker will be Maj Gen (rtd) Peter Williams – Chairman, The BRIXMIS Association. The subject of Peter’s talk will be “BRIXMIS” in Cold War East Germany.
Peter’s talk will describe the extraordinary ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ contrast between the formal military-military diplomatic activities of the Mission and its highly successful intelligence collection patrolling out on the ground.
Despite the numerous crises during the Cold War, it was only on the eve of German re-unification in 1990 that the Soviets finally ended the liaison agreements that they had put in place with their wartime Western Allies in 1946.
Peter served twice in BRIXMIS, the British military liaison mission in East Germany, during the 1980s.
