“Defence innovation has acquired the same pejorative contradiction of terms as military intelligence/precision. Discuss!”

John (JW) Warriner – Director Consulting Services at CGI

JW will wear two hats for this talk: both his Reservist airman’s hat and his industry consultant’s cap, to look at Defence Innovation from both side of the coin. He likes to be challenging, perhaps sharing a few home truths, in order to raise the bar and to encourage a discussion so that those present can glean some real takeaways in the sense of connecting information innovation with UK Defence and National Security.

“What we might learn from the Battle of Britain about the contemporary multi-domain integration challenge”

AVM Moore will consider the Battle of Britain as a multi-domain operation and highlight its resonance with contemporary information age warfare. He will argue that the successful defence of the United Kingdom was not just a triumph of technology but a result of the well-rehearsed and executed organisational system implemented by Air Chief Marshal Dowding, which ensured that actionable intelligence and timely information was placed into the hands of those that could do something about it, drawing some parallels with the challenge faced by Defence today.

Delivering Software to the Warfighter to Ensure Mission Success

It has been said that “Software is eating the world” and this is reflected in our everyday environment as evidenced by John Lewis, who consider themselves a software company and noting that NETFLIX only exists in a virtual world.  How does Defence operate securely, assuredly and ethically in such an environment?  More pertinently, how does the Royal Signals get on the front foot when operating, delivering and maintaining capability whose software systems are secure by design, ethically constructed and provisioned at a pace which will deliver new software into the hands of the Warfighter to ensure mission success?

An RSI Seminar addressing the above issues will be held on 21st November at the London headquarters of the National Cyber Security Centre 1020hrs -1630hrs.  Speakers will include senior representatives from MOD, the NCSC and leading companies from Industry such as Microsoft, IBM, ESRI etc.

Date: 21 Nov 2019
Time: 10:20 start
Venue: National Cyber Security Centre, Nova South, 160 Victoria St, London, SW1E 5LB

Registration:

This event is free to RSI Members and AFCEA Members.  AFCEA Members MUST provide a current and valid membership number with their bid to attend.  If you are not a member of either organisation, there will be a £50 charge to cover catering costs.  All bids to attend should be submitted to either or to .  Please note that attendees must be confirmed in advance of the event and must bring photographic proof of identity on the day (i.e. mil / gov ID, driving license or passport).  Company ID is not acceptable.
