Information Capability Management Master of Science Degree

On Thursday 13 July our Chair, Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Nigel Harrison MBE, had the pleasure of joining the 2023 Graduands of the Defence College or Military Capability Integration and Cranfield University at their graduation ceremony held at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom.   The AFCEA Academic Trust Prize was presented to Major Stuart Keenan of the Royal Corps of Signals, in recognition of their top academic performance on the Information Capability Management Master of Science Degree.

Donation by AFCEA(UK) Southern Chapter

On 6 July 2023, the UK Southern Chapter met in the Wardroom at HMS Collingwood to receive a talk by Captain Jason Strutt RN, Deputy Director of Navy Digital, on “From welfare to warfare: crossing the Maritime digital divide.”  During the evening Carl Horrocks, President of the Southern Chapter, kindly presented a donation to the Academic Trust, which was accepted by our Chair, Nigel Harrison.

Army Foreman of Signals Course

On Wednesday 21 June 2023, the Army’s Foreman of Signals Course 92 delivered their final project briefs at the Royal School of Signals before graduating as supervisors.  Our Chair, Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Nigel Harrison MBE was able to recognise Staff Sergeant Max Tyson as the top academic student on the course of eighteen students.  Also in attendance were Trustees Colonel Becky Jacques-Grey OBE and Colonel (Retired) Andrew Percival.

Max, with Staff Sergeant Oliver Mason, was also awarded with the Institution of Engineering and Technology prize for best project presentation.  Project ASTRO CYPHER investigated the potential benefits of Unitary Braid Division Multiplexing as a method of implementing security for satellite communication links.

It is with great sadness that soon after finishing his training Max passed away.  The condolences and sympathies of the Trust are offered to Max’s family, and the many friends and colleagues of an truly outstanding soldier and talented technical leader.

Royal Navy Ceremonial Divisions 2023

PR – HMS Collingwood conducted its annual Ceremonial Divisions. The reviewing officer and guest of honour, Chef d’Etat-Major des Armees General Thierry Burkhard, (French Cheif of Defence Staff). His UK counterpart Admiral Sir Tony Radakin KCB ADC accompanied him along with Captain Tim Davey, CO of HMS Collingwood.

On 16 June 2023, Trustee Commander (Retired) Dr Andrew Stewart EdD MBE, attended the annual Ceremonial Divisions at HMS Collingwood, presenting the AFCEA (UK) Academic Trust Armada Dish to: Petty Officer Engineering Technician Jonathon Beeney, winner of the POET Qualifying Course 2023 prize; and, Leading Engineering Technician Joel Shaw, winner of the LET Qualifying Course 2023 prize.  Pictured with the Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin KCB ADC and Chef d’État-Major des Armées General Thierry Burkhard. 

Although unable to attend the presentations, the winner of the Systems Engineering Management Course Award 2023 is Lieutenant Benjamin Miller-Glentworth RN

On Friday 7 June 2023 our Trustee, Group Captain Nick Hartley RAFR, attended the graduation ceremony at the Defence School of Intelligence to present the prize for top academic performance to two Signals Intelligence Collection Courses.

Congratulations to Able Rate Gemma Workman (SCC 8-22, who won the prestigious Arthur Britton Award) and to Signaller Thomas Spencer (SCC 9-22).  AFCEA (UK) wishes you every success at the exciting start to your professional career journey in the British Armed Forces.

On Wednesday 17 May 2023 Trustee Squadron Leader (Retired) Martin Edwards attended the RAF’s annual Engineering and Cyberspace Conference, held at Number 1 Radio School, RAF Cosford.  In the presence of the Eng(CE) community, Martin had the pleasure to present to Flight Lieutenant Jess Kelly an AFCEA (UK) Academic Trust Armada Dish in recognition of their accolade as ‘Top RAF Cyberspace Officer Student 2022’.

No1RS Seminar and Awards, 17 May 23 – multiple winners and women in defence

On Thursday 4th May 2023, Colonel (Retired) Andrew Percival had the pleasure of presenting the AFCEA Academic Trust’s prize Armada Dish to Staff Sergeant Rajendra Dangi for his academic attainment during the Army’s Foreman of Signals (Information Systems) course at the Defence School of Communications and Information Systems, Blandford. In the presence of the FofS (IS) community at the Graduation Dinner, SSgt Dangi was also attained top student accolade.

Army Electronic Warfare Capability Manager

On 28 March 2023 Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Nigel Harrison, the Chair of the Academic Trust, attended the course graduation at the Defence School of Communications and Information Systems, Blandford to present the AFCEA (UK) Academic Trust Armada Dish to Staff Sergeant Darren Holland, the top academic performance on the new EWCM course.

Signals Intelligence Collection Courses

On 17 March 2023 Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Nigel Harrison, the Chair of the Academic Trust, accompanied by the Commanders of the Defence School of Intelligence and the Signals Intelligence Wing, presented the AFCEA (UK) Academic Trust prize Coins to Signallers Molly Saxby and Lewis Day, top academic students on their respective courses at a ceremony at DSI Chicksands.

On 27 July 2022 Group Captain Nick Hartley RAFR, Trustee, attended the graduation ceremony at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, Shrivenham to present the AFCEA (UK) Academic Trust Armada Dish to Lieutenant Colonel Paul Cocker, Royal New Zealand Corps of Signals.
